We're looking for an enthusiastic Graduate Engineer to join our growing Facade Engineering team in Hong Kong. 

This is a brilliant opportunity for someone who wants to leave their mark on some of the most exciting projects in Hong Kong and further afield. 

What sort of projects would I work on?

Jewel Changi Airport

Working with Safdie Architects, our team engineered the world’s largest gridshell to enclose a building. The innovative glass and steel roof structure spans more than 200 meters (650 feet) at its widest point, with only intermittent supports in the garden – the result is an interior that is almost column free. The 6,000 ton cover is made up of 9,304 dimensionally unique, triangular glass roof panels! 

Hong Kong International Cruise Terminal

Buro Happold was commissioned to provide structural engineering and design consultation services for the terminal. Arranged over three levels, the facility is designed to offer an exceptional traveller experience. Featuring a latticed facade with ‘fins’ that let light filter into the check-in spaces and a sweeping steel roof that houses a roof garden, the building affords visitors a sense of luxury from the very beginning of their journey.

Guangzhou Infinitus Plaza

Buro Happold was commissioned to provide structural engineering and design consultation services for the terminal. Arranged over three levels, the facility is designed to offer an exceptional traveller experience. Featuring a latticed facade with ‘fins’ that let light filter into the check-in spaces and a sweeping steel roof that houses a roof garden, the building affords visitors a sense of luxury from the very beginning of their journey.

What would I do?

- Assist in developing jobs technically from initial client ideas, using various materials such as: aluminium, steel, concrete, stone, glass and timber. Understand architectural component detail design including aesthetics.

- Deliver work in a timely and technically competent manner.

- Increase your awareness of basic weather performance issues, basic building physics including ventilation, solar gain control, thermal insulation and glare control.

- Develop your experience of the practical aspects of handling and fabricating typical cladding materials.

- Understand the design life of various façade components and materials and have the opportunity to inspect existing buildings to understand what failure or a defect looks like.

- Hone your understanding of international standards and building codes. (For example Hong Kong codes and regulations, Eurocodes, International Building Code, UBC, Aluminium Design Manual, Australian and NZ standards, ASTM Standards, Saudi Building Code.)

- Work with other teams and gain an awareness of the problems and constraints of the other major design disciplines such as Architectural, Sustainability, Structures, Building Services/MEP, Fire Engineering, Acoustics, and Digital Engineering.

- Develop strong design leadership on façade issues to the rest of the Client's design team.

- Maintain good client relations throughout the job.

- Improve your competency across various software such as Autodesk Robot, STAAD, Strand, SAP2000, MEPLA, AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, and Therm and Window, Grasshopper and Rhino.

What are we looking for?

- Must have - a strong interest in building design and the impact of the building envelope on sustainability outcomes.

- Enthusiastic about work and proactive about learning, asking questions, innovating and staying up to date with industry trends.

- Ability to accept a degree of responsibility in a team-based organisation, combined with ability to work independently.

- Microsoft Office, specifically Excel (a detailed understanding including the use of macros).

- Strong interpersonal and organisational skills.

- Proficiency in written and spoken English, and ideally also Mandarin and Cantonese.
